For all of you who wanted to know why golf happens to be 18 holes, well here's your answer...
According to the book "Golf the early days" the original course at St Andrews was of 22 holes eleven straight out and then the same eleven coming home but in reverse therefore twenty two holes. That number no doubt dictated by the land area. As the game became more popular it was thought safer to have seperate holes for the inward and outer journey but in order to do that they had to have double greens still a feature of the course. They also had to widen the fairways to accomadet such a concept.
Then in 1764 William St Clair played the 22 hole in the ridiculously low score of then of 121 storkes and a decision was made to toughen up the course by reducing the first four holes to two therefore reducing the overall total to two.
Thus the standard of eighteen holes which the rest of the world adopted as the game spread internationally. So the concept of 18 holes has been in place since then and returning nines just a means of improving course and playing logisitics.
