Your ball is sitting down (well down) in long grass 2 or 3 feet from green, the pin is say about another 2 feet on,what shot would you play to get close to pin, the green also slopes away from you.

none, just try to get it on the green and below the hole. Next time don’t miss where you have no shot at the pin.

Firstly, curse that my approach shot, though only 5 ft from pin has ended here…............ Secondly, I’d use the old 56’ wedge, grip it real close to the shaft end of the grip, ball near my back foot, then chop down on that bastard grass just behind my ball and hope to hell I don’t crack it over the green or alternatively not hit the ball at all and bury the wedge head in the rough. That’s just what I would do though, I’ve played from the rough on nearly every course I’ve ever played, and still suck at it.

My recommendation would be to use the "bellied wedge" shot. Meaning you should strike the ball with the flat edge of your wedge about midway or on the top of the ball. You ball will roll out hot depending how firm you strike it. You need to practice this shot on the chipping green in case you get into these tough situations.

Yeah I think that the bellied wedge would work a little better, you are more likely to get closer to the pin.

This is something that I was told you would have to learn how to manuever around because there will come a time where you will find yourself in this situation. It doesn't happen often but it can and will happen.

I've read this thread and understand the situation except for one thing. How long is this grass? I have one more question. How much chopping around on the long grass would a person be allowed to do?

As I said in my intro, I'm a terrible golfer but want to learn so I hope you don't mind my questions too much. Thanks!

If it were me, I would hope no one was watching. I would probably add a lot of strokes trying to get out of this.

Lol that would only make you look like an amateur now wouldn't it? You should make time to practice, you don't want to put yourself in a situation where you are in the mist of a lot of people and they see you fumble the club.. no pun intended.
  2.
Actually I have to admit, I am an amateur. I do need to take time to practice.

Adding to the "is anyone watching" consideration...if no one is, what about picking the ball up an moving it out of the grass.

I'm not sure if there is a spike the golf ball into the cup rule, but i'm sure it's against them
