Your ball landed in the woods. To make matters worse, you noticed that the ball is surrounded by the roots of a tree. How would you guys play this shot?

I would play a choke down 3 wood or 3 iron and hit a low hook/slice depending on which one i would need to get it back into the fairway.

Take a low iron or a wedge (Depending on the distance from the hole) and just play a small punch or chip shot out of the roots. If you do this, try to pick the ball cleanly off of the grass and try not to hit the roots. If you do you risk damaging your club or hurting your wrists.

say "adios" to that ball... You can always take an unplayable lie, but it isn't a free drop.

Let me tell you, I thought I could get the ball outta of a similar lie to which you describe. It wasn't pretty, I hit the root behind the ball and sprained my wrist. I would always take an unplayable lie after that.

And what do you do when your ball lands in a water trap? Couldn't the same apply here?

You're going to have to take a water hazard in that case :P
